No Tube, bus or Thameslink on Christmas Day. Last year Thameslink also ran nothing on Boxing Day and wound down by 9pm on Christmas Eve. 2026 plans due in Dec.

If you are travelling from Barnet over Christmas, the fixed points are simple: there is no Tube, no London bus and no Thameslink train on Christmas Day, and Thameslink ran nothing on Boxing Day last year either. The detail for 2026, which engineering works hit which line on which days, is not published yet. TfL and Thameslink both put out their festive plans in early December, and this page will carry them. Here is what last year looked like, from the operators themselves, and what is already fixed for 2026.

The quick answer

  • Christmas Day, Friday 25 December 2026: no Tube, buses or Thameslink. That is the standing TfL and Thameslink pattern, repeated every year.
  • Christmas Eve winds down early. Last year Thameslink ran a Saturday service until about 5pm, then fewer trains, with last trains reaching their destinations by around 9pm.
  • 2026 engineering works: not announced yet. Expected early December; last year TfL published on 2 December and Thameslink updated its festive page on 8 December.

Northern line and buses (TfL)

Most of Barnet travels on the Northern line, from the High Barnet branch (Totteridge, Woodside Park, West Finchley, Finchley Central) or the Edgware branch (Burnt Oak, Colindale, Hendon Central, Brent Cross, Golders Green).

Last year TfL’s plan ran from Saturday 20 December 2025 to Monday 5 January 2026 (TfL press release, 2 December 2025):

  • Christmas Eve: services ran but finished early.
  • Christmas Day: no service on most public transport, Tube and buses included.
  • Boxing Day: a Sunday service on the Underground, London Buses and trams, but no Night Tube and no Elizabeth line.
  • New Year’s Eve: apart from planned closures, services ran all night. Some central London stations may close at short notice to control crowds.
  • The central London Congestion Charge was suspended from 25 December to 1 January. ULEZ, which covers the whole of Barnet, applied as normal every day except Christmas Day.

For 2026, that pattern points to: a Sunday service on Saturday 26 December (Boxing Day), with the substitute bank holiday on Monday 28 December (GOV.UK). TfL has not said how it will run on the 28th; that will be in its December announcement.

West Barnet’s fast link to St Pancras is Thameslink. Last year’s day-by-day plan (Thameslink, festive period 2025):

On New Year’s Eve, Blackfriars became exit-only from 8.30pm with no trains calling after 11.30pm, and no Thameslink trains called at Farringdon after about 00.30. If you are heading home to Mill Hill Broadway or Hendon after midnight, St Pancras was the station to use.

Christmas can mean long closures on this line, and they are announced early. In 2024 there were no Thameslink trains between St Pancras and Harpenden for nine days, Saturday 21 to Sunday 29 December, with buses replacing trains, while Network Rail replaced the bridge deck at Agar Grove in Camden. That closure, which cut Mill Hill Broadway and Hendon off from St Pancras, was announced on 26 September 2024, three months ahead (Network Rail, 26 September 2024). Thameslink’s list of major 2025 festive works had nothing of that length through Barnet, only the Sunday 4 January closure through central London. No 2026 closure has been announced as of 25 September; if one is coming, it could be published any week now, and this page will carry it.

Great Northern: New Barnet and Oakleigh Park

New Barnet and Oakleigh Park are served by Great Northern into Moorgate and King’s Cross. Great Northern has not yet published a 2026 festive page, and last year’s is no longer online. Check National Rail’s Christmas page from early December. Our Barnet trains guide covers the normal timetable.

Driving at Christmas: the Brent Cross flyover

Drivers face one long job that will be running all through Christmas. TfL starts renewal work on the A41 Brent Cross flyover on the night of 30 September 2026. There are lane restrictions on the A41 Hendon Way from 1 to 28 October, then from Thursday 29 October 2026 a contraflow on the flyover, with traffic running both ways on less road space. TfL expects the work to last until 2028 and says journeys through Brent Cross, Staples Corner and Henlys Corner will take longer (TfL, A41 Brent Cross flyover works). For Christmas shopping at Brent Cross, the Tube or bus will usually be quicker.

Christmas parking

Barnet has offered festive parking deals in some years and not others. In 2023 it made parking half price in all council pay-to-park bays and car parks on every December weekend up to Christmas, excluding permit bays and private car parks (Barnet Council, December 2023). Its December 2025 round-up of Christmas services (Barnet Council) made no mention of a parking offer. Nothing has been announced for 2026. The normal charges are in our Barnet parking guide.
