Barnet roadworks this week: A5 Edgware Road and A1 Aylmer Road lane closures, Apex Corner night resurfacing running to 2027, and the trackers that stay current.

Barnet’s traffic lives and dies by a handful of roads: the A1 and A41 running north to south, the A5 Edgware Road down the western boundary, the A406 North Circular cutting across the bottom of the borough, and the M1 feeding into Staples Corner. When one of them is dug up, the whole borough feels it. This page covers what is being dug up now, the long-running schemes worth knowing about, and, since roadworks change faster than any article, the three trackers that always show the current picture.

What is being worked on now

As of 7 August 2026, TfL’s live traffic status lists four current works in the borough, all rated minimal disruption:

  • A5 Edgware Road Flyover (Barnet/Brent boundary): a southbound lane closed for UK Power Networks work, 5 to 11 August.
  • A1 Aylmer Road (East Finchley, Barnet/Haringey boundary): lane one closed westbound for urgent water repairs, 5 to 12 August.
  • A5 West Hendon Broadway: two overlapping sets of lane restrictions, for electrical connection works (4 to 10 August) and TfL’s own works (7 to 14 August).

The big corridors themselves, the A406, A41, A5 and A1, were all showing no exceptional delays when checked. These entries roll over weekly, so treat the list above as a snapshot and the status page as the truth.

Apex Corner: night resurfacing until summer 2027

The longest-running disruption in the borough is at Apex Corner (Northway Circus) in Mill Hill, where the A1 meets the A41. A TfL traffic order, made in consultation with Barnet Council and effective from 26 January 2026, authorises phased carriageway resurfacing overnight, 10pm to 5am, with the order running to 25 July 2027. The roads it covers read like a map of the junction: Watford Way and Barnet Way in both directions, Edgware Way, Pike Road, Selvage Lane and The Broadway, with signed diversions for each closed arm. Not every road is closed every night; the order is a licence for the phases, so expect intermittent overnight closures at Apex Corner into next summer.

Brent Cross and the M1: the one to watch

The A41 Brent Cross flyover over the North Circular has carried a safety-critical 7.5-tonne weight restriction since October 2022, with heavy vehicles diverted via the mid-level roundabout, under a TfL order. TfL calls Brent Cross one of London’s most important road structures, with over 120,000 vehicles a day, and local press reports that a multi-year renewal of the flyover and the wider Staples Corner interchange is being planned with initial Department for Transport funding. No confirmed works dates have been published, so watch TfL’s announcements; when this scheme starts it will be the borough’s biggest traffic story for years.

On the motorway itself the news is good: National Highways’ current closure reports list no works on the M1 between junction 1 at Staples Corner and junction 4, and its M1 planned maintenance page shows nothing between junctions 1 and 6.

The three trackers that stay current

Roadworks pages date fast; these do not.

  1. TfL traffic status: live disruption on the red routes (A1, A41, A5, A406), organised by corridor with dates and severity.
  2. LondonWorks: TfL’s register of every proposed and current streetwork in Greater London. Search by postcode, street or the borough of Barnet, up to three months ahead, as a list or a map. This is the one that catches the gas board digging up your own street.
  3. Barnet TraffWeb: the council’s own live map of traffic orders, consultations, collision data and parking suspensions, run by Causeway for the borough. Barely anyone knows it exists, and it is the definitive record of restrictions on council roads.

Who runs which road (and where to report a pothole)

Two authorities share Barnet’s roads, and a report to the wrong one goes nowhere. TfL manages the red routes, which it says make up 5% of London’s roads but carry up to 30% of its traffic: in Barnet that means the A1 (Watford Way and Barnet Way), the A41, the A5 and the A406. Defects on those go to TfL Streetcare or 0343 222 1234. Everything else, from the A1000 through Whetstone and High Barnet to your own street, is Barnet Council’s, reported through barnet.gov.uk or FixMyStreet.

The council side is mid-way through a heavy investment cycle. Barnet approved a £15.52 million highways programme for 2026/27 in December 2025, £9 million of it on roads and £3.4 million on pavements, part of a £97 million package announced in 2024 for its 723 km of roads and 1,290 km of pavements; the council says it repaired nearly 4,000 potholes in 2025 (Highways News, March 2026).

Station parking, for the park-and-ride commute

  • High Barnet station: 173-space surface car park run by Saba for TfL, open 24/7, cashless with ANPR. £11 a weekday, £6.30 at weekends, £54 a week, £216 a month, with EV bays and six Blue Badge spaces.
  • Mill Hill Broadway station: 42-space car park run by APCOA for Thameslink. £11.10 a weekday, dropping to £8.10 after 10am and £3.60 after 5pm, £4.10 at weekends, season tickets from £45.10 a week, Blue Badge holders free. Note the 2-metre height limit.
  • Edgware station: no operator tariff page was published when we checked; the nearest confirmed TfL car park is Canons Park, one stop away with 161 spaces.

What it means for you

Day to day, Barnet’s roadworks in August 2026 are an inconvenience rather than a crisis: short-dated lane closures on the A5 and A1, night phases at Apex Corner, and a quiet M1. The habits that save you time are checking TfL’s status page before a North Circular or A41 trip, checking LondonWorks before assuming your own street is clear, and reporting potholes to the right authority first time. The thing to keep an eye on is Brent Cross: a multi-year renewal of the borough’s most heavily used interchange is coming, and when TfL confirms dates, this page will be updated.
