M1 northbound shuts J1 to J5 from 10pm Monday to Thursday. Sussex Ring stays closed to 12 October, and new yellow lines reach ten Barnet streets on Wednesday.

The M1 is the one to plan around this week. National Highways is closing the northbound carriageway completely between junction 1 at Staples Corner and junction 5, from 10pm to 5.30am, on four nights running from Monday 21 to Thursday 24 September.

Junctions 1 and 2 are Barnet’s own. If you head north late in the evening, you will be diverted off onto local roads every night this week.

Closer to home, the Barnet roadworks that shape a daily journey are much as they were. Sussex Ring in Woodside Park is still shut in daytime phases to 12 October, and a new borough-wide parking order comes into force on Wednesday.

This page is rewritten each time we check the sources. Everything below was verified on 20 September 2026 against Barnet Council’s own statutory traffic orders, TfL’s live feeds, National Highways’ closure report and National Rail.

What is restricted right now

  • Sussex Ring and Lullington Garth, Woodside Park (N12): daytime closures to 12 October. Nine stretches of road around the Sussex Ring roundabout close in phases for carriageway reconstruction and resurfacing, 9am to 6pm. Parking is prohibited inside each closure and vehicles left there may be removed. The signed diversion is Frith Lane, Dollis Road, Nether Street, Ballards Lane and Alexander Grove (the made order). The full phase table is below.
  • Limes Avenue, Golders Green (NW11): one way until 31 October. The one-way system at the Golders Green Road junction started at 8am on Thursday 17 September and the order gives it 44 days. Northbound traffic on Golders Green Road cannot turn left in, southbound traffic cannot turn right in, and residents get in via The Drive NW11 (the made order).
  • Meadway, Hampstead Garden Suburb (NW11): no parking until the end of November. “At any time” waiting and loading restrictions run on Meadway between Heathgate and Bigwood Road while a burst water main is repaired. They started on 31 August and run for 91 days, an estimated end of 30 November. Any vehicle waiting in contravention may be removed (the order). This is the restriction most likely to catch a resident out, because the road looks open.
  • Barnfield Road, Burnt Oak (HA8): one-way system suspended for 474 days. The one-way was lifted between Watling Avenue and River Approach on 31 August. Construction vehicles only may turn left in from River Approach and out via Watling Avenue, for the step-free access upgrade at Burnt Oak station (the made order). We covered what that means for the shops on Watling Avenue in our report on the 474-day order.
  • Page Street service road, Mill Hill (NW7): closed until Tuesday. The service road shut at its junction with Page Street, westwards for 72 metres, on Saturday 19 September. The order gives four days, so it is due back on 22 September. The alternative route is Pursley Road, Devonshire Road, the B552 and the A1 (the made order).
  • Diploma Avenue, East Finchley (N2): footpath closed to 30 October. The footpath between Diploma Avenue and the High Road East Finchley car park closed on 3 September for carriageway resurfacing. The made order gives 57 days, which ends on 30 October, and pedestrians follow temporary signage (the made order).
  • Deansbrook Road, Edgware (HA8): footpath closed for 460 days. The south-eastern footpath is closed between Deansbrook Road and Barnfield Road for storage unit works. The order took effect on 24 August, with an estimated end of 27 November 2027 (the order).
  • Moxon Street and Victors Way, High Barnet (EN5): parking changed on 13 September. Both orders run for 479 days. Moxon Street lost the paid bays beside 98 High Street and outside 1 Moxon Street, and the loading bay outside 3 to 7 Moxon Street, replaced by a peak-hours single yellow line (the made order). Victors Way went the other way and gained six resident permit bays (Zone C), Monday to Saturday 8am to 6.30pm (the made order). Losing the loading bay is the part the Moxon Street shops will feel.

The order closes the roads in this order. Side roads close at their junctions where needed, and the restrictions only bite when the signs and cones are actually out. Access for residents and essential services is maintained as far as is practicable.

  • Meadow Gardens, Edgware (HA8), Monday 21 September, 21 days. “At any time” waiting and loading restrictions go on both sides of Meadow Gardens, from the Farm Road junction up to the boundary of Nos. 30 and 34, for gas mains replacement. Estimated end 11 October (the notice).
  • Whitings Road, High Barnet (EN5), Monday 21 September, 409 days. Five shared permit and paid bays opposite Nos. 39 to 47 go, along with the resident bays outside Nos. 37 to 39 and outside No.45, replaced by peak-hours single yellow lines. The disabled badge holders’ bay outside No.41 moves to outside No.47 (the made order).
  • Marshalls Close, Friern Barnet (N11), Wednesday 23 September, seven days. This one is new since we last checked. The council made the order on 17 September to close Marshalls Close between a point opposite the boundary of Nos. 92 and 94 and a point opposite the north-eastern flank wall of No.96, for electrical works. It runs 9.30am to 3.30pm (the made order).
  • Three short jobs on Wednesday 23 September. Brookside Road NW11 closes between Highfield Road and Alba Gardens for one night, 10pm to 5am, for sewer repairs, with the diversion via Alba Gardens, Golders Green Road and Highfield Road (the notice). Friern Mount Drive N20 closes for one night on the same terms, between the boundaries of Nos. 62 and 64 and Nos. 70 and 72, diverting via Langton Avenue and Buckingham Avenue, with a fallback date of Monday 28 September if it slips (the notice). Glengall Road HA8 closes between Warwick Avenue and Kenilworth Road for one day, 9.30am to 2.30pm, for pothole patching, diverting via Kenilworth Road, Bushfield Crescent and Broadfields Avenue (the notice).

New yellow lines and bus stop clearways from Wednesday

This is the significant new order, and nobody can object to it: Barnet made it on 17 September and it comes into force on Wednesday 24 September. Amendment No.316 and Amendment No.213 do three things at once.

First, new “at any time” waiting restrictions go in to deter obstructive parking and improve sightlines, at junctions around Harrowes Meade, Broadfields Avenue, Parsons Grove, Franklyn Gardens, Hazel Gardens and Hillcrest Avenue in HA8, and at Aberdeen Gardens and Ashley Walk with Osborn Gardens NW7. Fresh lengths also go in on:

  • West Road EN4, south-west side between Woodfield Drive and West Walk
  • Balmoral Avenue N11, at the side of No.1 Hampton Close and outside No.11
  • Bishops Grove N2, both sides, between The Bishops Avenue and Nusantara
  • Byron Drive N2, between Nos. 3 and 9
  • Bridge Lane NW11, outside No.109
  • Potter’s Road EN5, both sides between Woodville Road and Hadley Road
  • Denton Close EN5, west side outside Nos. 15 to 21
  • Hazel Gardens HA8, outside Nos. 15 to 18

Second, nine existing timed restrictions are upgraded to “at any time”. Two of them currently apply only on event days, from 1pm to 6pm, at the Ashley Walk and Osbourne Gardens junctions with Devonshire Road NW7. Two more are the one-hour 2pm to 3pm restrictions at the Woodside Grange Road and Holden Avenue junctions with Woodside Park Road N12. Outside Golderslea on Finchley Road NW11, a morning-peak restriction becomes permanent. On East End Road N3, between Ellerton Lodge and Cavendish Avenue, a 2pm to 3pm restriction becomes 7am to 7pm, Monday to Saturday.

Third, and this is the part that will move buses, the same orders deliver a London Bus Priority Network scheme. Six new bus stop clearways are proposed and two existing ones extended:

Losing 5.6 metres of pay-by-phone bay outside Halliwelle Parade is the change Golders Green shoppers will notice. Copies of the orders and the council’s statement of reasons are available for six weeks from parking.consultations@barnet.gov.uk, or from the Design Team, Highways Section, 2 Bristol Avenue, Colindale NW9 4EW. Anyone who wants to question whether the orders are within the council’s powers has six weeks from 17 September to apply to the High Court (the notice).

What closes after that

  • Avondale Avenue, New Barnet (EN5), 1 and 13 October. New since our last check. The council intends to make an order putting “at any time” waiting and loading restrictions on both sides of Avondale Avenue, between Church Hill Road and Derwent Avenue, for sewer rehabilitation. It runs in two phases of one day each, on Thursday 1 October and Tuesday 13 October, with the alternative route via Connaught Avenue and Derwent Avenue. This one is an intention, not yet a decision (the notice).
  • Friern Watch Avenue, North Finchley (N12), Monday 12 October, 19 days. The road closes from the High Road to outside No.2 while a crane removes cladding from 886 to 902 High Road. Northbound traffic diverts via the High Road, Mayfield Avenue and Friary Road, southbound via the High Road, Ravensdale Avenue and Friary Road (the made order).
  • Mayfield Avenue, North Finchley (N12), Monday 19 October, 19 days. Same job, next side road, from the High Road to outside No.2. Southbound traffic diverts via the High Road, Friern Watch Avenue and Friary Road, northbound via the High Road, Finchley Park and Lynton Avenue (the made order). Residents keep access to both. The two closures overlap for a week, which takes both side roads out of use for most of a month.
  • Packhorse Lane, Ridge, from 7 October, six months. This one is outside the borough: Ridge is in Hertsmere, in Hertfordshire, about three miles north of High Barnet. Hertfordshire County Council intends to close 1,203 metres of Packhorse Lane to all traffic except access, from the B556 St Albans Road round to Mimms Lane. The notice says plainly that there is no alternative route available. The order runs 18 months but the works are scheduled to take six (the notice). If you cut through Ridge towards Shenley or Radlett, that lane goes in a fortnight.

The council wants to take out five electric vehicle charging bays

This is still the notice worth reading if you charge on the street, and the window to object is open until 15 October. Barnet proposes to remove five on-street EV charging bays and move a sixth, with each stretch reverting to the parking restriction it had before. Three of the five are on Grahame Park Way NW9, the road past the RAF Museum.

The council says amendments to the on-street charging infrastructure have made the changes necessary. It has never said what those amendments were. Objections and comments quote reference SCR730 and go to the Design Team, 2 Bristol Avenue, Colindale NW9 4EW, by email to parking.consultations@barnet.gov.uk or through Barnet TraffWeb (the notice). We set out what the six locations have in common in our report on the proposal.

The deadlines, and the two orders that have now landed

Two borough-wide parking orders made on 10 September are now in force. Amendment No.314 and Amendment No.211, which put new “at any time” yellow lines into ten postcodes and upgraded several timed restrictions, took effect on 16 September. The one most drivers will notice is on Greenlands Lane NW4, between the A1 Great North Way and the entrance to Copthall Playing Fields, where a restriction that only applied from 1pm to 6pm on event days now applies all the time (the notice). Amendment No.315 and Amendment No.212, creating six dedicated disabled bays and removing five treated as redundant, took effect on 17 September (the notice). The High Court window on both runs six weeks from 10 September.

Still open:

  • Thursday 1 October: the Mayfield Avenue closure. The order is made and the dates are set, but the Public Notice Portal still shows a feedback window on it, running from 10 September to 1 October (the notice).
  • Thursday 15 October: the EV charging bay removals, reference SCR730, as above.

Closed since our last check: the Selvage Lane NW7 and Glendor Gardens HA8 proposal, reference SCR737, took objections until 17 September (the notice). No made order had appeared on the portal when we checked on 20 September.

The red routes: quieter than they have been for a month

TfL’s live feed listed no roadworks at all inside the borough when we checked at 00:40 on Sunday 20 September, which is the clearest it has been since early August. The two Thames Water jobs on the borough’s south-western edge, at Garth Road on the A41 and at the Cricklewood Lane junction with the A5, have both gone from the feed, as has the Brent Cross interchange night resurfacing.

One live entry did name Barnet. The A111 Chase Side at the junction of Avenue Road was closed in both directions after a road traffic collision, logged at 00:04 and updated at 00:06 on Sunday morning, with TfL advising alternative routes and reporting no delays on the diversion. That junction is in Southgate, N14, on the Enfield side of the boundary, and TfL files the entry under both boroughs. A collision closure normally clears within hours, so treat it as a snapshot rather than a standing restriction (TfL traffic status).

The A41 Brent Cross flyover over the North Circular still carries a safety-critical 7.5-tonne weight restriction, in place since October 2022, with heavy vehicles diverted via the mid-level roundabout under a TfL order. TfL calls Brent Cross one of London’s most important road structures, carrying over 120,000 vehicles a day.

Apex Corner: what we can and cannot stand up today

The longest-running disruption in the borough is at Apex Corner (Northway Circus) in Mill Hill, where the A1 meets the A41. A TfL traffic order, made in consultation with Barnet Council, authorised phased overnight carriageway resurfacing there from 10pm to 5am, with the order effective from 26 January 2026 and running to 25 July 2027. Not every road is closed every night; the order is a licence for the phases, so expect intermittent overnight closures into next summer.

We could not re-verify that today. Both Public Notice Portal entries for the Northway Circus works have now rolled off the site and return 404, which is what happens to statutory notices after they have been up for a while. The terms above are what the order said when we read it in full; we are flagging rather than quietly repeating them. The motorways: the M1 shuts northbound for four nights

National Highways’ closure report covers Friday 18 September to Thursday 24 September, and one entry dominates it locally.

  • M1 northbound, junction 1 to junction 5: the carriageway closes completely, 10pm to 5.30am, on Monday 21, Tuesday 22, Wednesday 23 and Thursday 24 September. Junction 1 is Staples Corner and junction 2 is the A1 at Mill Hill, so this closes Barnet’s own stretch of the motorway on four consecutive nights. National Highways gives the reason as surfacing works and routes the diversion over the local road network. This is a full carriageway closure, not a lane closure, and it is a change from last week, when there was nothing at all on the M1 between junction 1 and junction 6.
  • A1(M) southbound, junction 3 to junction 1: closed 10pm to 5.30am on Tuesday 22 and Wednesday 23 September. Junction 1 is South Mimms. The scheme details describe lane, slip road and carriageway closures between junction 4 and junction 1 for surfacing, diverting over local roads. If you drive the A1 north past South Mimms late in the evening, plan around those two nights.
  • A1(M) tonight, Sunday 20 September: the southbound carriageway and slip roads close between junction 4 and junction 2, and the northbound between junction 3 and junction 4, from 10pm to 5.30am, for the Hatfield tunnel works.
  • A1(M) northbound, junction 4 entry slip: closed 10pm to 5.30am on Tuesday 22 September for safety fence repairs.
  • Nothing in the report touches the A41, the A5 or the A406 inside or near the borough, and the M1 junction 6 to junction 8 reconstruction scheme north of the M25 now shows only slip road work at junction 8, on Sunday night.

Trains: the Northern line is clear for three more weekends

The Northern line was showing a good service when we checked on 20 September, with no disruption on either the High Barnet or the Mill Hill East branch. TfL’s forward book lists no planned closures on the line between now and 12 October, which is three clear weekends (TfL Northern line status).

The main line is a different story, and next weekend is the one to diarise.

  • Saturday 26 and Sunday 27 September: buses from Mill Hill Broadway. From about 01:15 on the Sunday morning until 08:30, buses replace trains between Mill Hill Broadway and Luton and Bedford. The notice warns that replacement vehicles may be busier than usual (the notice).
  • Sunday 27 September: buses from New Barnet. Until about 08:45, buses replace early morning trains between Finsbury Park and Gordon Hill, New Barnet and Welwyn Garden City, on the Moorgate to Stevenage and King’s Cross to Welwyn Garden City routes. Paper tickets are accepted on the Underground and London Buses between Moorgate or King’s Cross and Finsbury Park (the notice). LNER services out of King’s Cross will also leave later than advertised that day, because of engineering work in the King’s Cross area (the notice).
  • Today, Sunday 20 September: amended Thameslink services. Engineering work between Luton and Kentish Town, the stretch that carries Mill Hill Broadway, Hendon and Cricklewood, means trains that usually run between Luton and Rainham will only run between Plumstead and Rainham, and St Albans City to Sutton trains via Mitcham Junction will only run between London Blackfriars and Sutton. Tickets are accepted on Southeastern between London and Plumstead (the notice).

Nothing in National Rail’s planned works register touches a Barnet station in the week beginning Monday 28 September. The next one after that is the weekend of 24 October, when buses again replace trains between Mill Hill Broadway and Bedford and Luton.

One closure just outside the borough is worth knowing about if you use the Piccadilly line from Arnos Grove, which is in Enfield, about a mile east of Friern Barnet. From 02:00 on Saturday 26 September and all day Sunday 27 September, including the Friday and Saturday Night Tube, there is no Piccadilly line service between Cockfosters and Uxbridge (TfL line status).

The three trackers that stay current

Roadworks pages date fast. These do not.

  1. TfL traffic status: live disruption on the red routes (A1, A41, A5, A406), organised by corridor with dates and severity.
  2. LondonWorks: TfL’s register of every proposed and current streetwork in Greater London. Search by postcode, street or the borough of Barnet, up to three months ahead. This is the one that catches the gas board digging up your own street.
  3. Barnet TraffWeb: the council’s own live map of traffic orders, consultations, collision data and parking suspensions. Barely anyone knows it exists, and it is the definitive record of restrictions on council roads.

The council also publishes a street works and road closures page. For the statutory orders themselves, which carry the exact extent, hours and diversion of every closure, search Barnet on the Public Notice Portal. That is where the closures above come from.

What we could not confirm today

barnet.gov.uk returned a bot-detection page again, and the reader proxy we normally fall back on is now behind a challenge page too, so the council’s own street works listing could not be read and is linked above unquoted. Nothing on this page rests on it.

The two Apex Corner notices have rolled off the Public Notice Portal, as set out above, so the 25 July 2027 end date for the Northway Circus resurfacing could not be re-checked against a live primary source today.

Who runs which road, and where to report a pothole

Two authorities share Barnet’s roads, and a report to the wrong one goes nowhere. TfL manages the red routes, which it says make up 5% of London’s roads but carry up to 30% of its traffic. In Barnet that means the A1 (Watford Way and Barnet Way), the A41, the A5 and the A406. Defects on those go to TfL Streetcare or 0343 222 1234.

Everything else is Barnet Council’s, from the A1000 through Whetstone and High Barnet down to your own street. Report those through barnet.gov.uk or FixMyStreet.

The council side is mid-way through a heavy investment cycle. Barnet approved a £15.52 million highways programme for 2026/27 in December 2025, £9 million of it on roads and £3.4 million on pavements. That is part of a £97 million package announced in 2024 for its 723 km of roads and 1,290 km of pavements, and the council says it repaired nearly 4,000 potholes in 2025 (Highways News, March 2026).

Station parking, for the park-and-ride commute

Tariffs below were re-checked on 13 September 2026 and are unchanged.

  • High Barnet station: 173-space surface car park run by Saba for TfL, open 24/7, cashless with ANPR. £11 a weekday, £6.30 at weekends, £54 a week, £216 a month, £648 a quarter, £2,592 a year. Motorcycles £2. Bank holidays are charged at the weekday rate. Six of the 173 spaces are blue badge bays. Blue Badge holders park free in a designated bay, but you have to register the stay at a machine on arrival, and standard rates apply if those bays are full.
  • Mill Hill Broadway station: 42-space car park run by APCOA for Thameslink. £11.10 a weekday, dropping to £8.10 after 10am and £3.60 after 5pm, £4.10 at weekends. Season tickets are £45.10 a week, £169.70 a month, £444.70 a quarter and £1,455.90 a year, with a premier ticket at £1,742. Blue Badge holders park free. A 15p convenience fee applies to every tariff, and daily rates expire at 4am.
  • Edgware station: no operator tariff page was published when we checked. The nearest confirmed TfL car park is Canons Park, one stop away with 161 spaces.

What it means for you

If you drive north on the M1 late in the evening this week, you are going off at Staples Corner or Mill Hill every night from Monday to Thursday. The northbound carriageway is fully closed from junction 1 to junction 5 between 10pm and 5.30am, and the diversion runs on local roads, so allow for it rather than discovering it at the slip road.

The closure to plan around in the daytime is still Sussex Ring in Woodside Park, in phases to 12 October. The closures run 9am to 6pm, so an early start clears them, and the diversion goes the long way round by Frith Lane and Nether Street. If the school run crosses that roundabout, leave earlier.

In Golders Green, Limes Avenue is now one way at Golders Green Road and stays that way to 31 October. You cannot turn into it from either direction; residents get in via The Drive.

Wednesday is the day parking changes. New “at any time” yellow lines land in EN4, EN5, HA8, N2, N11, N12, NW7 and NW11 at once, several event-day and one-hour restrictions become permanent, and six new bus stop clearways go in around Potter’s Road, East Barnet Road, Athenaeum Road and The Ridgeway. If you park regularly on any of the streets listed above, read the signs on Wednesday morning before you leave the car.

If you catch a train early next Sunday, 27 September, check before you leave. Mill Hill Broadway is on a bus northwards until 08:30 and New Barnet is on a bus until 08:45. The Northern line, by contrast, has nothing booked at all before 12 October.
