Most of the borough rides the Northern line, from the High Barnet branch (Totteridge, Woodside Park, Finchley) or the Edgware branch (Burnt Oak, Colindale, Hendon Central, Golders Green). The west of the borough has Thameslink at Mill Hill Broadway and Hendon, the fastest way to a mainline terminal. And East Barnet has Great Northern from New Barnet and Oakleigh Park into Moorgate. The Northern line: most of Barnet’s commute

From High Barnet, a direct Bank-branch train reaches Bank in 37 minutes, per the TfL timetable; in the 8am peak hour there are ten direct trains to Bank alone, plus the Charing Cross-branch services on top. From Edgware, Bank is 35 minutes, with peak trains about every five minutes. From Hendon Central, Bank is about 28 minutes.

Late finishes are covered. On a typical weeknight the last trains out of High Barnet leave around midnight, and the last train back from Bank toward High Barnet leaves central London at roughly 00:20, arriving just before 1am. On Friday and Saturday nights the Night Tube runs on both Barnet branches, Morden to Edgware and Morden to High Barnet, but via Charing Cross only: coming home from the City after midnight at the weekend means changing onto the Charing Cross branch.

A closure to note this month: TfL’s planned track closures list has the High Barnet branch shut over the August bank holiday weekend: Camden Town to High Barnet from the Friday 28 August Night Tube, then Archway to High Barnet and Mill Hill East from Saturday 29 to Monday 31 August. The Edgware branch is unaffected. Check before you travel that weekend.

Thameslink: the fast way to a terminal

The quickest rail journey in the borough is from the west side. Mill Hill Broadway to St Pancras takes about 19 minutes and Hendon about 18, on Thameslink trains that continue through the core to Farringdon, City Thameslink and Blackfriars, which is why City workers in Mill Hill rarely touch the Tube. Trainline’s route pages count over a hundred trains a day from Mill Hill Broadway (about 28 minutes to Blackfriars). Late-evening service holds up: on a typical weeknight the last Thameslink from St Pancras toward Mill Hill Broadway leaves around 00:18, with trains roughly every 20 minutes before it.

Both stations take contactless and Oyster like the Tube: Mill Hill Broadway is Zone 4, Hendon a boundary Zone 3/4 station.

Great Northern: New Barnet and Oakleigh Park to Moorgate

From New Barnet, Great Northern runs directly into Moorgate in about 31 minutes, half-hourly off-peak and more often in the peaks, calling at Oakleigh Park (Zone 4) on the way. On a typical weeknight the last train back leaves Moorgate at about 00:01, reaching New Barnet at half past midnight; miss it and the fallback is the Northern line to High Barnet plus the 107 bus, which takes about the same time.

Here is the quirk worth knowing. New Barnet and High Barnet are both Zone 5, but the same journey does not cost the same. National Rail pay-as-you-go runs on a higher scale than the Tube inside the zones: New Barnet to Moorgate is £6.60 peak / £4.40 off-peak, against £5.30 / £3.80 from High Barnet to Bank on the Underground. Over a five-day commuting week that is £13.20 a day against £10.60, purely for boarding a train instead of a Tube one mile east.

What it costs in 2026
