North Finchley's theatre has 46 shows and 131 performances booked to New Year's Eve. Rapunzel runs 12 to 24 December and the cheapest seat is £9.50.

The borough’s main theatre has filled its autumn. Counting every date now on sale, artsdepot at Tally Ho Corner in North Finchley has 46 productions and 131 individual performances booked between today and New Year’s Eve. Prices start at £9.50 and most shows sit at either £13.75 or £19.

The programme runs across two auditoriums, the 395-seat Pentland Theatre and the smaller Studio Theatre, with one event in the cafe. What follows is taken from the venue’s own booking pages, checked on 1 September. Dates and prices change, so confirm before you book.

The dates worth putting in the diary now

  • Rapunzel, Saturday 12 to Thursday 24 December. The Christmas show, in the Studio Theatre, 50 minutes with no interval, recommended for ages 3 to 11, from £13.75. Twenty-three performances, and it went on general sale on 17 June, so the good slots are already going (details).
  • Aliens Love Panta Claus, Tuesday 8 to Thursday 31 December. The bigger festive run, 33 performances in the Pentland Theatre, 55 minutes, ages 3 and up, from £15 (details).
  • Dear Zoo, Friday 23 to Tuesday 27 October. Seven performances over half term, suitable from age 1, tickets from £15 (details).
  • Romeo & Juliet, Tuesday 13 and Wednesday 14 October, plus a schools matinee on the Wednesday at noon with tickets at £12. Recommended for ages 7 and up, from £19 (details).
  • The Nutcracker, Tuesday 29 to Thursday 31 December. Six performances to close the year, from £13.75, with one relaxed performance (details).

October is the heaviest month of the season, with 20 productions opening. It includes half term, when Dear Zoo, Surinderella, Club Origami and the Nick Cope Family Show all land inside a fortnight.

The cheap seats, and the discount most people miss

The lowest price in the season is £9.50, for LIT/UP: Big Beat Playground, Flying High, a drop-in session in the cafe on Sunday 22 November for ages 0 to 11 (details). After that, children’s and family shows generally start at £13.75 and adult evening shows at £19.

Two discounts are worth knowing about, and neither is advertised loudly:

  • Pick & Mix. Book three or more shows in one go and you take 10% off, across all price bands.
  • Groups of 10 or more get a discount arranged through the box office rather than online.

For the Christmas show there is also a schools and nurseries rate on term-time performances, which for Rapunzel was £11 early bird and £13 standard.

Relaxed and signed performances

Five of the season’s productions carry an accessible performance, which is unusually good coverage for a venue this size:

  • Relaxed performances at Club Origami, Aliens Love Panta Claus, Rapunzel and The Nutcracker.
  • British Sign Language performances at Toto the Ninja Cat and the Great Snake Escape, Aliens Love Panta Claus and Rapunzel.
  • Audio described performances at Ockham’s Razor: Collaborator, Dear Zoo, The Magic Flute and LIT/UP Lighthouse.

Both Christmas shows carry a relaxed and a signed performance, which means a family that cannot manage a standard performance has a real choice in December rather than a single fixed date.

Age guidance, because it varies more than you would expect

The programme swings hard between the family shows and the adult ones, and the guidance on the venue’s own pages is worth reading before booking.

  • Ages 1 and up: Dear Zoo.
  • Ages 2 to 5: Club Origami, which runs 40 minutes and then a stay-and-play.
  • Strictly 18+: Sex & Disability, Scummy Mummies: Hot Mess, and Avi Nussbaum.
  • 18+ with no under-16s admitted: Connor Burns: FLOW.

Connor Burns is the strictest in the season. If you are booking for a teenager, check the individual event page rather than assuming a comedy night is fine.

What it means for you

If you have children and December matters to you, book now rather than in November. Rapunzel and Aliens Love Panta Claus between them account for 56 of the season’s 131 performances, both went on general sale in the summer, and the relaxed and signed dates are single performances that sell first.

If you are going more than once, buy in one transaction. Three shows at £19 is £57, and Pick & Mix takes £5.70 off that for no extra effort. Booking them separately does not.

Getting there is easy without a car. artsdepot is at 5 Nether Street, Tally Ho Corner, North Finchley N12 0GA, above the bus interchange and a short walk from West Finchley and Woodside Park stations on the Northern line.
